Russia is reportedly preparing to conduct a new test of its nuclear-powered, nuclear-capable cruise missile, the 9M730 Burevestnik, also known as SSC-X-9 Skyfall. This development comes ahead of critical talks between U.S. and Russian presidents. Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump met in Alaska, prompting concerns about the test’s timing and consequences.
Strategic Timing: Missile Test and Diplomatic Talks
According to Ukrainian military intelligence, preparations are underway for the Burevestnik test at the Pankovo test site on the Barents Sea archipelago of Novaya Zemlya. Increased activity at the location, including the presence of ships and planes linked to earlier missile testing, is visible on satellite imagery. The date of the test aligns with President Trump and President Putin’s next summit, which will focus on the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.
Ukrainian intelligence spokesperson Andriy Yusov suggested that if the test proves successful, Russia may use the results as leverage in negotiations with the West. He emphasized that the purpose of the test is to validate the scientific and technical solutions implemented by the missile.
The Burevestnik: Capabilities and Controversies
Russia produced the nuclear-powered cruise missile known as the 9M730 Burevestnik. According to President Putin, it is “invincible,” meaning that missile defenses cannot easily intercept it due to its nearly limitless range and unpredictable flight path.
