During his visit to Mauritius, Prime Minister Narendra Modi carried sacred Sangam water from the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. He shared that while many Mauritians attended the grand event, others couldn’t, prompting him to bring the holy water as a symbol of their spiritual connection.
“This holy water will be merged into Ganga Talab tomorrow. I pray that Mauritius reaches new heights of prosperity by the grace of Maa Ganga,” PM Modi said while addressing a gathering at the Trianon Convention Centre.
Strengthening India-Mauritius Cultural Ties
PM Modi emphasized the deep-rooted historical and cultural ties between India and Mauritius, recalling how Indian freedom fighters, brought to Mauritius centuries ago, found solace and inspiration in Lord Ram and Ramcharitmanas.
He also reminisced about his 1998 visit to Mauritius for the International Ramayan Conference, stating that the spiritual bond between the two nations remains strong. He praised the Mauritian government’s decision to declare a half-day holiday during Lord Ram Lalla’s Pran Pratishtha in Ayodhya, reflecting the shared faith between the two nations.
Special Recognition & OCI Cards for Mauritius
During the event, PM Modi handed over Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards to former Mauritius Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam and his wife. He announced that OCI cards will now be available to the seventh generation of Indian-origin Mauritians, further strengthening ancestral ties.
He also acknowledged Mauritius’s National Day and paid tribute to historical figures who contributed to the country’s independence, including Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam and Manilal Doctor.
India-Mauritius Collaboration on Development & Climate Initiatives
PM Modi highlighted India’s support for Mauritius in various developmental projects and its role in India’s SAGAR Vision (Security and Growth for All in the Region). He appreciated Mauritius’s active participation in the International Solar Alliance and the Global Biofuels Alliance.
As part of the “Ek Pedh Maa Ke Naam” (Plant4Mother) initiative, PM Modi planted a sapling at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanic Garden, further emphasizing India’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
