Munir Rejects Speculation Over Zardari’s Position
Pakistan’s Army Chief, General Asim Munir, has categorically denied rumours suggesting any plan to remove President Asif Ali Zardari, describing them as false and harmful. The clarification came after weeks of speculation circulating on social media that claimed Zardari might be asked to step down, paving the way for Munir to assume the presidency.
Speaking to veteran journalist Suhail Warraich in a recent encounter in Brussels, Munir apparently emphasized that such allegations are not only unfounded but also fueled by forces that are looking for political instability. “There is no attempt to replace the president or the prime minister,” Munir was said to have told Warraich’s column for Jang.
“Protector of the Country, Not Seeking Power”
Munir pointed out that his office is guided by duty and not ambition. As reported by the column, he said: “God has made me protector of the country. I do not desire any position other than that.”
The military chief is said to have emphasized that reconciliation through politics could only happen if there was a “sincere apology.” Although he didn’t mention any name, observers feel that it was directed towards the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and its incarcerated leader Imran Khan.
The top government leaders such as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi already put to rest rumors of leadership transition, affirming that the civilian government remains firmly established.
Balancing Global Relations and Applauding Diplomacy
With regard to foreign affairs, Munir showed faith in Pakistan’s capacity to sustain even-handed relations between Washington and Beijing. “We will not sacrifice one friend for the other,” he was quoted as saying, indicating a policy of balance in international alignments.
The general also made positive comments regarding former US President Donald Trump’s peace initiatives, which he called “genuine.” The general made the astonishing revelation that Pakistan was among the first countries to nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, and other countries later followed suit.

A Push for Stability Amid Political Turbulence
Munir’s comments follow a period when Pakistan’s political environment is still volatile, with rumors and partisan disputes increasing uncertainty. His words are intended to strengthen stability by closing up talks about a potential power realignment. By emphasizing his adherence to the military role, calling for reconciliation and emphasizing even-handed foreign policy, Munir has become a stabilizing voice in a shaky political environment.
