North Korea’s Military Role in Russia’s War
The North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has hailed his nation’s troops sent to aid Russia in the war against Ukraine as a “heroic army.” State media said that Kim spoke to military commanders who were taking part in foreign operations, with a large concentration of them being in Russia’s Kursk province, where spy agencies estimate Pyongyang has dispatched more than 10,000 combatants.
In the meeting, Kim showed his appreciation, stating, “Our army is now doing what it should do and must do. It will so do in the future as well.” The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that Kim extended warm support to overseas service personnel, emphasizing their contribution to strengthening North Korea’s strategic interests.
Deepening Russia-North Korea Partnership
The action underscores the expanding political and military cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow. In June last year, Kim and Russian President Vladimir Putin inked a strategic partnership treaty that incorporated a mutual defence agreement. This was a key move in coordinating the two nations in light of mounting tensions with the West.
South Korean and Western intelligence officials have established that not only did North Korea send thousands of soldiers but also provided Russia with artillery shells, missiles, and rocket systems that have a long range. It has been reported that nearly 600 North Korean troops have died and thousands of others injured while fighting for Russia.

Global Reactions and Uncertain Diplomacy
The deployment of North Korean troops brings additional complexity to the Russia-Ukraine war, particularly as US President Donald Trump has recently upped diplomatic efforts to end the war. Trump has engaged both Russian and Ukrainian leaders in discussions, calling for negotiations.
Putin has avoided directly addressing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, though, even as he last week complimented North Korean troops on their “heroic” efforts on behalf of Russia’s war effort.
With Kim’s public endorsements of his military personnel in Russia, North Korea is indicating its willingness to assume a more prominent role in reconfiguring the power balance in Eastern Europe. The action highlights how the war in Ukraine is no longer limited to local actors but increasingly driven by global alliances and rivalries.
