The North African nation strengthens its global standing with increased investments and modernization in defense capabilities. Morocco has climbed to the 59th position in the Global Firepower 2025 rankings, which assess the military strength of 145 nations worldwide. With a Power Index score of 1.1273—where a lower score signifies greater strength—Morocco solidifies its growing influence on the global stage.
On the African continent, Morocco ranks 7th, following Egypt (19th globally), Algeria (26th), Nigeria (36th), South Africa (40th), Ethiopia (52nd), and Angola (56th). Globally, the top three spots go to the United States (Power Index: 0.0744), Russia (0.0788), and China.
The Royal Armed Forces (FAR) of Morocco are quite robust with 200,000 active-duty personnel. They are also backed by 150,000 reservists and 50,000 paramilitary forces. There are over 15 million individuals in the country eligible for military service which gives Morocco a significant reserve for recruitment and mobilization if needed. The ground forces possess an extensive arsenal with 903 tanks, 7,877 armored vehicles, 396 self-propelled artillery systems, 153 towed artillery units, and 129 mobile rocket launchers. This impressive array showcases their formidable capabilities. This diverse inventory enhances the nation’s ability to adapt to various operational demands.
The Royal Air Force of Morocco has an impressive fleet of 260 aircraft, including 83 fighter jets, 78 helicopters, and two refueling planes. This allows them to protect their airspace effectively and extend their operational reach.
On the other hand, the Royal Navy’s fleet consists of six frigates, one corvette, and 105 patrol vessels. However, they don’t have some key assets like submarines, destroyers, and helicopter carriers. This highlights areas where they could grow and expand their capabilities.
In 2025, Morocco allocated nearly MAD 135 billion ($13 billion) to its defense budget. This significant investment underscores the country’s commitment to modernizing its military through advanced equipment procurement. It also highlights the development of a domestic defense industry in collaboration with international partners.
Morocco’s climb from 61st place in 2024 to 59th this year reflects steady progress in bolstering its military strength. By prioritizing modernization and fostering strategic partnerships, the nation continues to enhance its global and regional influence.
