The Houthis confirmed that the Israeli airstrikes has killed the Prime Minister of their rebel-run government Ahmad-al-Rahawi in Yemen on Saturday. He had been serving as the prime minister of Houthi-led administration since August 2024.
As per the reports, al-Rahawi lost his life along with several other ministers when the Israeli strikes hit the city on Thursday. The AFP quotes the Houthi statement, “We announce the martyrdom of the fighter Ahmed Ghaleb Nasser Al-Rahawi…along with several of his ministerial colleagues, as they were targeted by the treacherous Israeli criminal enemy.”
Who was Ahmed-al-Rahawi?
Ahmad-al-Rahawi was born into a well-known al-Rahawi trive in Yemen’s southern Abyan Governorate. His father Ghaleb Naseer-al-Rahawi was also active in politics before he was assassinated in the 1970s. He was involved in the public service from a young age and built a reputation as a practical and effective administrator.
Before he became the Prime Minister, al-Rahawi held several key positions in local government. he worked as director and chairman of Khanfar District and later became the deputy government of Al-Mahwit. Eventually, he served as the Governor of Abyan. Through these positions, e learnt to handle Yemen’s tough and tense situations and regional politics over the years.

In 2019, he was appointed as the Supreme Political Council, which is the top governing authority in Houthi-controlled areas. While working on this position, he grew the trust that Houthis placed in him as they continued to consolidate power in northern parts of Yemen after taking control of Sanaa in 2014.
Israel Confirms Strike
The strike was confirmed by the Israeli military. They stated that the strike ‘precisely struck a Houthi terrorist regime military target in the area of Sanaa in Yemen’. Reportedly, al-Rahawi was targeted with other ministers while attending a government workshop.
