Prince Alwaleed bin Khaled bin Talal Al Saud or Saudi Arabia’s ‘Sleeping Prince’ has passed away after living in a coma for almost two decades after suffering from a serious accident. The Saudi prince had been in a coma since he was 18 years of age.

His death was announced with sympathy from different organizations. The Global Imams Council, in a public statement, wrote, “As we share the sorrow of the Royal Family on this somber day, we remember with deep respect the forbearance and firmness exhibited by his father, Prince Khaled bin Talal, and his family, a testifying to their deep trust in the will and decree of Allah.”

The announcement continued, “We pray that the Almighty Allah surrounds the deceased Prince with His infinite mercy, admits him to His endless Paradise, and grants patience and consolation to his family and loved ones.”

During his lengthy coma, the prince’s family was steadfast and optimistic. Prince Khaled bin Talal and his family members repeatedly turned down suggestions of disconnecting life support, trusting unflinchingly in God’s will. Instead of closing off access to the prince, the family permitted public glimpses into Alwaleed’s health, providing information that sustained hope among many.

Occasionally, brief videos and photographs of the prince in his hospital bed appeared on the internet. Those pictures, particularly of scarcely discernible finger movements, were prone to create renewed optimism. One, in particular, made headlines across the Arab world when his father announced the prince reacted to words by moving his fingers.

In spite of the trying and arduous journey, the resoluteness of the family embodied perseverance and faith, as they clung to Prince Alwaleed until his last breath.
