On October 4, President Donald Trump of the United States sent out an extremely strong message to Hamas on Truth Social, urging swift action on a peace deal. He praised Israel for its temporary ceasing of airstrikes even going as far as claiming that any delay-or even a continuing threat from-the Gaza Strip will not be tolerated. His points were made to emphasize the immediacy with which the situation claims resolution.

Applauding Israel's temporary halt of airstrikes, Trump emphasized that any delay by Hamas would jeopardize the entire peace process. "All bets will be off" if Hamas stalls or if Gaza continues to pose a security threat, he warned. The president's remarks underline the sense of urgency that the administration has been conveying about finalizing the deal, which would encompass both hostage releases and a more extensive overall peace settlement.

Peace Plan Gains Traction but Challenges Lie

The current ceasefire is one of the very few pauses, uncommon for two sides at war and with more than 66,000 lives lost by Palestinians in Gaza since October 2023, after a deadly assault by Hamas in Israel that took 1,200 lives. One evident source of support for the 20-point peace proposal by Trump, which now seems to be gaining some momentum, would be international backing-from the UK, India, Saudi Arabia, France and others.

Hamas is willing to talk about those terms; it has fallen short of fully endorsing Trump's peace proposal. Pivotal in marking such a significant turn of events is Hamas's readiness to release all its hostages but logistical challenges remain and majorly due to the recovery of deceased captives from the ruins of Gaza.

What holds by the Winning Ceasefire?

If Israel has suspended military operations, there is a lot of distrust at the very core and earlier ceasefires also failed but hostilities resumed. The pressure to negotiate has definitely increased as international outrage has focused on the extent of civilian casualties. Most of the main elements of the deal Hamas's disarmament and Israel's withdrawal from certain areas, however, remain very much unresolved.

The proposed timeline dictates that hostages will be released within 72 hours of acceptance of the deal by Israel but when that countdown actually begins is unclear. This would be because Israeli leaders expressed agreement days before Hamas offered a conditional response. As U.S. envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff arrive in Egypt to iron out details and the next few days could determine whether this ceasefire leads to a permanent end to two years of brutal warfare-or yet another failed attempt at peace.
