The X account of Anas al-Sharif, one of four Al Jazeera journalists killed alongside an assistant in a strike on Gaza City, published a powerful farewell message he had instructed to be shared upon his death.

The 28-year-old was killed on Sunday when a tent near Shifa Hospital in eastern Gaza City was struck. Just a few minutes before he died, he posted that Israel was ‘intensely bombarding Gaza City for more than two hours’.

Rights Advocates’ Respond

Following his death, Israel’s military accused al-Sharif of leading a Hamas cell ‘responsible for advancing rocket attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF troops’, citing intelligence and documents allegedly found in Gaza.

However, rights advocates disputed the claim, saying there was no evidence and that al-Sharif had been targeted for his frontline war reporting.

‘My Final Message’

His post began with: “This is my will and my final message. If these words reach you, know that Israel has succeeded in killing me and silencing my voice. First, peace be upon you and Allah’s mercy and blessings.”

In the message, al-Sharif described dedicating his life to amplifying the voices of Palestinians, enduring pain and loss while ‘never once hesitating to convey the truth as it is, without distortion or falsification.’” He urged people to protect Palestine and its children, ‘whose pure bodies were crushed under thousands of tons of Israeli bombs and missiles’.

He entrusted the care of his daughter Sham, son Salah, his mother, and his wife Bayan to readers, calling her ‘steadfast as the trunk of an olive tree that does not bend’.

Concluding, he wrote: “If I die, I die steadfast upon my principles… O Allah, accept me among the martyrs… Do not forget Gaza… And do not forget me in your sincere prayers.”

Tributes and Other Victims

Al Jazeera called al-Sharif ‘one of Gaza’s bravest journalists’, condemning the attack as ‘a desperate attempt to silence voices in anticipation of the occupation of Gaza’.

The network identified the other journalists killed as Mohammed Qreiqeh, Ibrahim Zaher, and Mohammed Noufal, along with an assistant.
