Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, has proposed allowing international nuclear monitoring if the United States and European nations lift sanctions. Araghchi emphasized the importance of a genuine and lasting agreement that includes strict monitoring and limitations on Iran’s uranium enrichment activities.
Araghchi urged European countries—Britain, France, and Germany—to reconsider their plan to reinstate a wide range of UN sanctions at the end of the month. He warned that such a move could lead to “unprecedentedly destructive” consequences for the region and beyond. He titled his piece, “A message from Tehran to Britain, France and Germany: in your own interests, you should change course.”
Progress in Negotiations
Despite internal challenges, Iran has made progress in recent discussions with UN weapons inspectors regarding their return to Iran’s nuclear sites. These talks are seen as a step toward meeting one of Europe’s preconditions for deferring the snapback of sanctions.

Internal Debate in Iran
Iran’s parliament is considering a law that, if UN sanctions are imposed, then the country might exit from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), even while diplomatic attempts continue.
This action would severely restrict access to Iran’s nuclear facilities from other countries.
Araghchi’s Warning to Europe
In his piece, Araghchi cautioned European leaders against believing that taking a hardline stance would elevate their status in the eyes of US President Donald Trump.
He argued that President Trump sees European nations as secondary actors and that this view is reinforced by their exclusion from important international issues such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Regional Implications
Araghchi also addressed the broader regional dynamics, stating that while Israel may present itself as capable of acting on behalf of the West, Iran’s military readiness challenges that notion.
He referred to Iran’s armed forces as “ready and capable of defeating Israel to the point where it will be forced to turn to ‘Grandpa’ for salvation,” suggesting a reliance on US military support.
Balancing Sanctions Relief
Iran’s proposal to allow nuclear monitoring in exchange for the lifting of sanctions presents a critical juncture in international relations. The outcome of these negotiations will have significant implications for regional stability and global diplomatic efforts.
