Senator Suhas Subramanyam has emerged victorious in the Democratic primary for Virginia’s 10th Congressional District, marking a historic win as the first Indian-American to succeed in this competitive race. The 37-year-old’s campaign received a significant boost from Rep. Jennifer Wexton, who endorsed him following her decision not to seek reelection.
Born in Houston to parents from Bengaluru, India, Subramanyam’s journey is a remarkable tale of perseverance and dedication. An American lawyer and member of the Virginia Senate, he attended Clear Lake High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Tulane University. He lives in Virginia with his wife, Miranda, and their two children.
Subramanyam first made history in 2019 when he became the first Indian-American, South Asian, and Hindu to be elected to the Virginia General Assembly. His victory in the Democratic primary solidifies his position as a trailblazer in American politics.
In his victory statement on June 18, Subramanyam expressed profound gratitude, stating, “I am honored to be your Democratic nominee for Virginia’s 10th Congressional District.” He acknowledged the support of his volunteers, activists, supporters, staff, and family, who collectively knocked on 50,000 doors and raised $1.2 million over an eight-month campaign.
Subramanyam extended special thanks to Congresswoman Wexton, whom he described as a “friend and mentor,” praising her fearless leadership and support. “Our community is so much better off because of her efforts. She will leave big shoes to fill, but I am ready for the challenge,” he said.
Looking ahead, Subramanyam is set to face Republican candidate Mike Clancy. He emphasized his commitment to maintaining the district’s Democratic leadership and vowed to make his constituents proud. “This district will remain blue, and I will do everything in my power to make my constituents proud,” he affirmed, drawing on his experience as a former White House advisor to President Barack Obama.
