Lebanon has decided to extend its ceasefire agreement with Israel until February 18, 2025. This move follows Israel’s failure to meet the deadline for withdrawing its troops from southern Lebanon. The deadline was part of a ceasefire deal that ended Israel’s conflict with Hezbollah.
Violence in Southern Lebanon
Meanwhile, violence erupted in southern Lebanon, where Israeli forces killed 22 people. Health officials reported that the violence occurred as residents tried to return home. In fact, Israeli forces fired on civilians attempting to return to villages that were supposed to be vacated by Israeli troops. As a result, 124 people were wounded, including a soldier.
Delayed Israeli Troop Withdrawal
The ceasefire, which began on November 27, outlined a 60-day deadline for Israeli troop withdrawal. However, Israel delayed its pullout, keeping troops in southern Lebanon beyond the deadline. In response, Lebanon and Israel have each blamed the other for the delay in fully implementing the agreement.
Hezbollah’s Support for Civilians
Furthermore, Hezbollah expressed its support for the residents’ determination to return home. The group called the day “glorious” and emphasized the people’s deep attachment to their land. Additionally, Hezbollah urged the international community to intervene in response to Israel’s actions.
UN and International Response
In addition, the United Nations stated that the conditions were not yet safe for civilians to return. Both France and the US have called on Israel to fully withdraw its forces from Lebanon.
Lebanon’s Commitment to the Ceasefire
Despite these challenges, Prime Minister Najib Mikati confirmed that Lebanon would continue to honor the ceasefire agreement until February 2025. He also reassured residents that the Lebanese army would be there to protect them during their return to the south.
Ongoing Tensions
The ceasefire has largely held since November, ending two months of intense fighting. This conflict was sparked by an attack on Israel by Hamas in early October 2023, which triggered heightened tensions in the region.
