Japan Issues Rare Megaquake Alert: Study Warns of 98-Ft Tsunami Risk & 1,99,000 Deaths

Japan is bracing itself after a powerful earthquake off the coast of Aomori prompted officials to issue a rare advisory warning of a megaquake. The strong tremor itself caused limited damage, but the alert has stirred memories of the catastrophic 2011 disaster and promoted authorities to urge residents to take preparedness seriously.

It was not a forecast but a reminder of how quickly seismic conditions in northern Japan can shift. And with the region perched on some of the world’s most volatile tectonic boundaries, even a moderate quake can temporarily raise the odds of something far worse.

Elevated Seismic Risk in Northern Japan

The recent magnitude 7.5 quake had increased concerns along the Hokkaido–Sanriku coast, an area shaped by the descent of the Pacific Plate beneath Japan. The zone includes the Japan Trench and the Chishima Trench, both known for many of Japan’s most damaging earthquakes.

Experts have noted that the latest event mimics the pattern prior to the 2011 tragedy, which also followed a smaller quake just days prior to the historic magnitude 9.0 megaquake and tsunami. For this reason, authorities urge communities to prepare while the risk is still heightened.

What Lessons From the 2011 Disaster

The 2011 earthquake and tsunami swept away whole coastal prefectures, reaching as high as 15 meters and unleashing a nuclear disaster at Fukushima Daiichi. Almost 20,000 lives were lost, and the emotional and environmental scarring remains.

The recent advisory taps into those memories, encouraging families to remain vigilant, keep emergency supplies ready and, most importantly, not to hesitate in following evacuation orders.

What are Possible Consequences of a Future Megaquake

Government modeling provides a bleak scenario of what another offshore megaquake could do in the Hokkaido-Sanriku zone: a tsunami as high as 30 metres could inundate coastal towns, over 2,20,000 buildings could be destroyed and economic losses could approach 31 trillion yen.

Casualties could reach to almost two lakh and thousands could face cold-related health emergencies if it happens in winter. The latest advisory encompasses 182 municipalities, making it one of the broadest alerts in years.

A More Focused Advisory Approach

This week’s warning is much more specific than the general alert issued in 2024 for a potential Nankai Trough earthquake that caused panic buying and cancellations of events because of its vagueness.

With clearer guidance and target areas this time, Japan’s Meteorological Agency expects residents to take preparation calmly and effectively.
