Legendary primatologist Jane Goodall, who passed away on Wednesday at 91. Her groundbreaking field studies of chimpanzees and unwavering championing of the environment left an indelible impact on conservation globally. DiCaprio, a close friend and longtime fan, posted an emotional statement and photos of their time together on social media.

A Global Icon of Conservation Bids Farewell

“Today we lost a real hero for the world, an inspiration to millions, and a dear friend,” the Academy Award-winning actress wrote. “Jane Goodall dedicated her life to defending our world and speaking up for the wild animals and the habitats they call home.” Her pathbreaking work on chimpanzees in Tanzania revolutionized the way we comprehend how our nearest relatives live, socialize, and even think as we are reminded that we are extremely connected not just to the chimpanzees and other great apes, but to life,” the actor added.

Looking back, DiCaprio continued, “For decades, Jane roamed the globe with boundless energy, inspiring generations to see the magic in the natural world. She addressed the next generation directly, filling them with hope, responsibility, and a sense that each of them could be a difference-maker. She encouraged millions to care, to act, and to hope. She never stopped.”

Celebrating Goodall’s 85th Birthday in Los Angeles

Both DiCaprio and Goodall developed a strong relationship over the years by sharing their passion for conservation. In 2019, he was present at her 85th birthday party in Los Angeles—officially declared as “Dr. Jane Goodall Day” in recognition of her contributions. Both also functioned as United Nations Messengers of Peace and worked on the 2024 environmental documentary ‘Howl.’
