As diplomatic tensions continue to escalate between India and Canada, External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr S Jaishankar’s earlier remarks have resurfaced on social media. During a press conference on June 8, 2023, he addressed the controversy surrounding reports of celebrations in Canada marking the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

S Jaishankar emphasized that there are deeper issues at play, stating, “Frankly, we are at a loss to understand why anyone would do this other than the requirements of vote bank politics. There is a larger underlying concern regarding the space provided to separatists, extremists, and individuals who advocate violence. This approach is detrimental to both the relationship and to Canada itself.”

In response to comments from Canada’s National Security Advisor regarding alleged Indian interference in domestic politics, Jaishankar used a Hindi proverb, “Ulta chor kotwal ko daante,” which translates to “the thief accuses the constable.” This statement highlights his frustration with Canada’s accusations amid the ongoing diplomatic fallout.

The situation remains tense as both nations navigate this complex diplomatic landscape, raising questions about the future of their bilateral relations.
