Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday held a telephonic conversation with Nepal’s interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki and expressed his condolences over the loss of lives during recent violent protests led by the Gen Z movement. Modi assured her of India’s full support in Nepal’s efforts to restore peace and stability, while also extending warm greetings on the occasion of Nepal’s National Day.

In a post shared on X, PM Modi wrote, “Had a warm conversation with Mrs. Sushila Karki, Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal. Conveyed heartfelt condolences on the recent tragic loss of lives and reaffirmed India’s steadfast support for her efforts to restore peace and stability. Also, I extended warm greetings to her and the people of Nepal on their National Day tomorrow.”

Nepal in Turmoil After Protests

The conversation comes just days after violent clashes on September 8 that left many dead and forced the dissolution of Nepal’s Parliament. The unrest was largely driven by Gen Z youth activists, who took to the streets over corruption, lack of accountability, and frustration with political elites. The situation escalated after the then government banned social media platforms, sparking nationwide anger and protests that reshaped the country’s politics.

Sushila Karki: From Chief Justice to Interim PM

Sushila Karki, a former Chief Justice of Nepal and the country’s first woman to hold the post, has now created history by becoming its first woman Prime Minister. Backed by the Gen Z movement, she was sworn in last Friday as interim Prime Minister after former PM KP Sharma Oli resigned amid mounting public pressure.

Karki will serve until March 5, 2026, when fresh parliamentary elections will be held. Her appointment was unique, as it came after protesters collectively endorsed her name, citing her reputation for integrity and independence.

Strengthening India-Nepal Ties

On Tuesday, India’s Ambassador to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava, met Karki at her office in Singha Durbar. During the meeting, he conveyed Prime Minister Modi’s congratulatory message on her appointment.

According to Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ambassador also reaffirmed India’s commitment to deepening cooperation. “Ambassador Srivastava conveyed the congratulatory message from Hon. Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi, to the Rt. Hon. Prime Minister on her appointment as the Prime Minister of Nepal and expressed India’s commitment to work together for further strengthening the close bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two neighbouring countries,” the ministry stated on X.

A New Chapter in Nepal’s Politics

The appointment of Sushila Karki, supported by a youth-driven movement, marks a historic turning point in Nepal’s political landscape. With India offering its support for peace, stability, and closer ties, the coming months will be crucial as the interim government navigates governance, reform, and preparations for elections.
