In a recent meet up of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Monday, Putin has agreed to Modi’s request to release Indian nationals recruited by the Russian military for the conflict in Ukraine. This decision came after a private dinner between the two leaders and offers relief to the families of these men. Sources say the release will happen within weeks, although it is uncertain if there will be a public announcement.
The issue gained attention when Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi highlighted it, prompting the Ministry of External Affairs to acknowledge the problem. At least 50 Indian men are reportedly serving in the conflict, with four having died. The MEA has already facilitated the return of 9-10 men who contacted the Indian Embassy, and others have received discharge papers but are awaiting formal release.
The Russian government has not officially commented but stated that recruiting foreign soldiers is legal and involves thorough checks. Besides Indians, recruits from Nepal, Sri Lanka, China, and African countries have also been deployed. The Nepali government has made similar requests to Russia.
Putin’s decision is seen as a special gesture towards India, reflecting strong bilateral ties and his personal rapport with Modi. During their meeting, Putin and Modi embraced, and Putin personally showed Modi around his estate.
Modi’s visit to Russia has raised concerns in Washington, where President Joe Biden is hosting a summit with NATO leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The US State Department expressed concerns about India’s relationship with Russia, but Indian officials dismissed these worries, emphasizing India’s commitment to the UN charter and calling for a diplomatic resolution to the Ukraine conflict.
