“I am Honoured”: Kamala Harris on Securing Enough Votes to Be the Democratic US Presidential Nominee

Kamala Harris officially secured the required number of delegate votes to become the Democratic US presidential nominee on Friday, marking a historic moment as she becomes the first woman of colour to lead a major party ticket. This announcement was made by Democratic National Committee chairman Jaime Harrison through a virtual vote.

In a post on X, Harris expressed her gratitude and determination, saying, “I am honoured to be the Democratic nominee for President of the United States. I will officially accept the nomination next week. This campaign is about people coming together, fueled by love of country, to fight for the best of who we are.”

Although the online voting process will continue until Monday, Harris’ campaign celebrated her crossing the threshold to secure the majority of delegates’ votes. The announcement was accompanied by news of her campaign raising $310 million last month, a substantial sum that demonstrates strong donor support. This fundraising effort significantly outpaced that of former President Donald Trump, whose campaign and associated committees reported raising $138.7 million in July.
