Fresh Gen-Z protest Shakes Nepal after 2 months, curfew imposed (Source: X/ @SouleFacts)
Authorities in Nepal’s Bara district have enforced a curfew after young demonstrators, identifying themselves as Gen Z, returned to the streets just a day after their clash with CPN-UML workers, ANI reported. From early morning, groups of protesters gathered in Simara and continued to face off with the police.
To control the growing tension, officials announced a curfew from 1 pm to 8 pm local time. Assistant chief district officer Chhabiraman Subedi confirmed the decision, stating to ANI that “Curfew has been reimposed following the clash with the police to bring the situation under control.”
The latest violence followed incidents on Wednesday in which six “Gen Z” protesters were injured during confrontations. According to ANI, trouble began after UML (Unified Marxist-Leninist) leaders planned a visit to the district ahead of the election scheduled for March 5, 2026. As tensions rose, police fired tear gas near Simara Airport, forcing the airport to temporarily suspend operations for safety reasons.
This is not the first major unrest linked to the Gen Z movement. In September, at least 76 people were killed during widespread demonstrations triggered by anger over a temporary government ban on social media. These protests, led by young citizens under the “Gen Z” banner, had a major political impact. The movement pressured former Prime Minister and UML Chairman KP Oli to resign from office.
Following the change in government, former Nepal Chief Justice Sushila Karki, aged 73, was sworn in as the country’s first woman prime minister of an interim government, further marking a significant shift in Nepal’s political history.
