France has confirmed that it carried out missile strikes in Syria over the weekend, targeting sites associated with the Islamic State (ISIS). French Armed Forces Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced the strikes on Tuesday via the social media platform X.

“On Sunday, French air forces carried out targeted strikes against Islamic State sites based on Syrian territory,” Lecornu stated.

The French airstrikes followed a similar military operation by the United States, which reported that its actions resulted in the deaths of two ISIS operatives.

Syria’s political landscape remains uncertain following the recent ousting of former President Bashar al-Assad by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group on December 8. This rapid campaign by HTS concluded a 13-year civil war but has raised numerous questions about the future of the multi-ethnic nation, particularly as foreign powers like Turkey and Russia maintain strong and potentially conflicting interests in the region.
