The FBI uncovered over 150 bombs during a raid on a Virginia farm, marking the largest seizure of explosive devices in its history. The raid took place in Isle of Wight County, approximately 180 miles (290 km) south of Washington, D.C.
Tip-Off Leads to Arrest
After receiving a tip, authorities arrested Brad Spafford on December 17. They alleged that he had been stockpiling weapons and explosives on his property, which he shared with his wife and two young children. During the search, agents found several bombs, including some inside a backpack labeled “#nolivesmatter,” a phrase linked to an anti-government extremist movement.
Lawyer Defends Client
Despite these findings, Spafford’s lawyer argued that his client posed no danger to the community. He requested his release from pre-trial detention. So far, Spafford has been charged only with possessing an unregistered short-barreled rifle, although more charges are anticipated.
Meanwhile, the FBI described the seized devices as “pipe bombs” and confirmed that this was the largest collection of finished explosives in its records.
Allegations Reveal Disturbing Behavior
According to investigators, Spafford allegedly used photos of President Joe Biden for target practice and expressed hope for Vice-President Kamala Harris’s assassination. Furthermore, court documents revealed that he recently sought sniper-rifle training at a local shooting range.
Interestingly, Spafford continued making bombs even after losing three fingers in a 2021 explosion involving a homemade device. This was reported by a neighbor who had secretly recorded interactions on Spafford’s 20-acre farm. The evidence collected from these visits led the FBI to conduct the raid.
Explosives Found Across the Farm
During the operation, agents discovered bombs scattered around the property. Many were stored in a detached garage, sorted by color, and labeled “lethal.” Additionally, some bombs were found strapped to a wearable vest.
Furthermore, agents uncovered a jar of HMTD, a highly volatile explosive, labeled “Dangerous” and stored in a freezer alongside food accessible to children.
Suspect’s Plans Raise Concerns
Moreover, investigators revealed that Spafford had plans to install a turret for a 50-caliber firearm on his roof. He also shared bizarre conspiracy theories, claiming that the federal government abducted missing children to train them as school shooters.
Legal Battle Over Pre-Trial Detention
Spafford’s lawyer dismissed the allegations as “rank speculation and fear-mongering.” He stated that his client had no criminal record and posed no direct threat to anyone.
“There is not a shred of evidence in the record that Mr. Spafford ever threatened anyone, and the contention that someone might be in danger because of their political views and comments is nonsensical,” the lawyer argued.
Although a judge initially approved Spafford’s release with electronic monitoring, the government has appealed the decision, seeking to keep him in detention.
