HAMBURG: European nations have sealed a major clean energy agreement to jointly develop 100 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind capacity, strengthening energy security and accelerating the region’s shift away from fossil fuels. The pact was finalised at the North Sea Summit with participation from the UK, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Norway.

The agreement aims to transform the North Sea into a large-scale renewable energy hub, reducing Europe’s dependence on imported oil and gas. Under the pact, countries will coordinate offshore wind projects and expand cross-border power grids to enable efficient sharing of electricity across national boundaries.

European leaders said the initiative would help ensure stable and affordable energy supplies while supporting climate targets. The 100 GW commitment forms part of broader long-term plans to significantly scale up offshore wind capacity in the region by mid-century.

The project is also expected to generate substantial economic benefits, including large investments, job creation and growth in manufacturing, port infrastructure and energy technology sectors. Coastal regions are likely to emerge as key centres of renewable energy development.

Once known primarily for oil and gas production, the North Sea is now being repositioned as a cornerstone of Europe’s clean energy transition, highlighting deepening cooperation among European nations on climate and energy security.
