Nobel Prizes for 2025 were announced on Tuesday, October 7. Multiple people across various fields were recognised for their contributions in their specific domains. For Physics, the winners were announced by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm, Sweden.
In 2025, the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret and John M. Martinis "for the discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunnelling and energy quantisation in an electric circuit."
Michel H. Devoret is a French physicist and Professor Emeritus of Applied Physics at Yale University, as well as a Professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara and Chief Scientist at Google Quantum AI. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2025 for "the discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunnelling and energy quantisation in an electric circuit." showing quantum effects on a scale visible in everyday technology and paving the way for quantum computing and advanced quantum devices.
Devoret was born in Paris, France, in 1953. He earned his engineering degree from the École Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications in Paris (1975), a DEA in Quantum Optics, and a PhD in Physics from the University of Paris-Sud (now Paris-Saclay University) in 1982. He began his scientific career working with Anatole Abragam at CEA-Saclay and performed post-doctoral research in the laboratory of John Clarke at the University of California, Berkeley.

Michel Devoret is a member of the French Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, two of the most prestigious scientific institutions in the world. He served as a professor at many prestigious institutions, including the Collège de France. He is also the recipient of many international prizes, like the Comstock Prize in Physics, the John Bell Prize (shared with Rob Schoelkopf), the Fritz London Memorial Prize (with John Martinis and Rob Schoelkopf), and the Micius Quantum Prize.
Michel Devoret was born in 1953, making him 72 years old in 2025.
