Turkey’s Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu was slammed with a fine for crossing the speed limit on a highway. He was found to be over-speeding at 225 km/h on the Ankara-Nigde highway, which is double the speed limit. A video of the incident was posted online on Sunday.

The clip was set to folk music, featured President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s speech praising the government infrastructure while showing Uraloglu’s speedometer rising as he overtakes other vehicles in the fast lane.

The clip quickly captured the attention of social media and fumed netizens. Many criticized the minister for setting a bad example by breaking the traffic rules. He was fined at 9,267 lira ($280), as per Reuters.

After receiving backlash on social media, Uraloglu issued a public statement on X saying that he regrets briefly crossing the speed limit unintentionally and assured that he will be more careful in the future.

“Adhering to speed limits is mandatory for everyone. The necessary penalty has been imposed by our Highway Gendarmerie. I would like to inform the public that I will be much more careful from now on,” he wrote.

However, the apology could not stop the critics. One person argued, “If someone who sets the rules on the highway breaks the rule, they should resign immediately.”
