A passenger train crashed near the town of Riedlingen in southwest Germany on Sunday, killing several individuals and injuring many others, German media reported, citing security sources.
The accident took place on a regional line between Sigmaringen and Ulm that covers approximately 90 kilometers (55 miles). Stuttgart police verified that about 100 individuals were on board when the crash happened. Although they would not give a specific death toll, officials confirmed there were “several injuries,” and at least two train carriages had derailed.
Photos released by German news agency DPA indicated that the derailed carriages were largely intact but twisted and lying on their sides, pointing to a violent derailment.
Emergency workers were rapidly deployed to the scene, and rescue efforts were underway throughout the evening. Investigations to identify the cause of the derailment were now underway and remain unclear.
The train route is a busy link in the Baden-Württemberg area, and the accident has raised alarm about the safety and maintenance of railways in the region. Further details are anticipated as officials carry on their efforts at the scene and establish the victims.
