A luxury superyacht called Da Vinci, with an estimated value of around Rs. 306 crore, sank in the Mediterranean Sea after catching flames near Ibiza, Spain. All seven people on the yacht are safe. The members onboard, including four passengers, two crew members and a captian, were rescued without injury. Regardless of the efforts, the fire was too intense to control and the yacht sank into the sea. The cause of the fire is not clear.
Fire Sparked in Engine Room
Luis Gascon, the maritime captain of Ibiza, told Ultima Hora that the yacht sank at 6:19 pm near the Ses Salines Natural Park. Although the reason for the eruption of fire is still unknown, it ignited in the engine room. Initially, it seemed manageable but turned violent quickly.

Salvamento Marítimo, the Spanish maritime rescue agency, shared a video of the fire and said, “Fire broke out on board the Da Vinci vessel, 7.3 miles southwest of Punta Gavina (Formentera). CCS Palma deployed the Guardamar Concepción Arenal and Salvamar Naos, which also transported firefighters. All seven crew members were safely evacuated to shore by the Naos. The fire could not be controlled, and the yacht eventually sank. The Guardamar remains in the area, clearing debris.”

The incident sparked online discussions with one user saying, “I don’t even want to imagine that situation.” Another remarked, “Boats with little professional maintenance, the sea corrodes the electrical installations and must be inspected every 6 months… It is not expensive to buy the boat. Keeping it in conditions is the problem.”

One commentator emphasized environmental concerns: “If throwing trash in the sea is punishable, if you sink a boat, is it considered the same?” Another noted, “They could already limit the access of yachts to Formentera… a little more control would not go wrong, that protects the island NOW.”
About Da Vinci
The Boat International suggests that Da Vinci was a luxury boat and a part of Spanish shipyard Astondoa’s 95 GLX series. It was built for entertainment and comprised a wet bar, barbecue, and a flybridge for open-air views. It could carry 10 passengers and included a private owner’s suite for an exclusive experience.
