Vivian Spohr, the 51-year-old wife of Lufthansa chairman and CEO Carsten Spohr, returned to Germany following a deadly accident in Italy that killed 24-year-old babysitter Gaia Costa.

The accident, which occurred last Tuesday on the Italian holiday island of Sardinia, is being investigated, reported La Repubblica.

What Occurred in Sardinia?

Gaia Costa was walking across a street in a pedestrian crosswalk in Porto Cervo, a seaside resort, when she was hit by a BMW X5 vehicle driven by Vivian Spohr.

Costa received serious head wounds, and after paramedics attempted to resuscitate her for around 20 minutes, she passed away at the scene.

Initial Hit-And-Run Claims Disputed

Initial reports indicated Spohr was speeding and ran away after she struck Costa and didn't even look back until bystanders stopped her. Her attorney, Angelo Merlini, has staunchly dismissed these reports.

"Unlike what was reported earlier, Vivian Spohr braked after the accident and gave first aid to the girl," he said to The Sun, stating that following attempts to assist, Spohr 'lost consciousness and fainted'. Merlini also insisted that Spohr had hit Costa at 'very slow speed'.

Spohr Under Investigation

While Spohr is still under investigation, a report by the New York Post stated that she had no requirements under the law to remain in Sardinia and left Italy. Her attorney emphasized that she is willing to cooperate with the authorities whenever needed.

"Vivian Spohr, implicated in the sad death, expresses her surprise and utmost regret at this extremely serious accident," Merlini stated. “She is at home in Germany but is ready to provide all the information requested by investigators as soon as the Prosecutor’s Office deems it appropriate.”
