A Lisbon Tragedy Night

Lisbon’s iconic Gloria funicular train, an old landmark enjoyed by locals and tourists alike, became a disaster area late Wednesday when one of its cars veered off the tracks and smashed into a building. Emergency responders said at least 15 died and 18 were injured, with foreign nationals among the wounded. One of the injured was a child.

Lisbon mayor Carlos Moedas called it “a tragic day for our city,” and said that the capital is “in mourning” as rescue efforts continue. Harrowing scenes from the scene saw rescue teams extracting passengers from the remains of the century-old tram-like vehicle.

Investigation Into the Cause

The reason behind the accident is yet to be determined, although a witness said he had seen the carriage “out of control, without brakes” just before the crash. One of the investigating units is the Judiciary Police’s Homicide Brigade.

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa conveyed his sincere regret and condolences, while the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen sent sympathies in a Portuguese-written message. Authorities made it clear that their priority is assisting the victims and their families as they investigate what happened.

Carris, the city’s public transport operator that runs the funicular, said all of its available resources were put into action immediately. Authorities also verified that the second car, which is located at the bottom of the line, was also unscathed, although its passengers jumped through its windows in a state of panic upon the accident.

What Is a Funicular?

A funicular is a railway system used for steep slopes, where two cars are attached to the opposite ends of a cable. One goes up as the other comes down, with traction powered by electric motors. The Gloria Funicular, which began operation in 1885, has become Lisbon’s most iconic symbol, connecting central Restauradores Square with bustling Bairro Alto district.

A Historic Landmark in Mourning

The Gloria Funicular has been a popular attraction for years, being the subject of countless postcards and guidebooks. There are four cars in total, each of which can take 42 people, providing not just travel, but also a breathtaking view of Lisbon hills.

Wednesday’s crash has thrown a dark shadow over the city’s heritage, startling locals and visitors alike. While investigations remain under way, the Gloria remains silent a testament to Lisbon’s charm and the vulnerability of its historic gems.
