A 2019 interview between the Dalai Lama and BBC journalist Rajini Vaidyanathan has resurfaced on social media, reigniting discussions on immigration. The Tibetan spiritual leader’s comments on uncontrolled immigration to Western countries, particularly regarding Europe’s cultural identity, have sparked reactions, including from Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

Dalai Lama on Immigration

When asked about immigration from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East to Europe, the Dalai Lama shared his views. He expressed support for allowing a limited number of people from Afghanistan or the Middle East to stay in Europe but voiced concerns about Europe losing its cultural identity. He stated, “The whole of Europe becoming a Muslim country? Impossible. Or an African country—also impossible.”

Cultural and Climatic Compatibility

The Dalai Lama suggested that immigrants might be better suited to remain in their homelands, citing the compatibility of climate and culture. He remarked, “They themselves are better to their own land, climatically. Much better, you’re too cold.” When Vaidyanathan noted her own parents had immigrated from India to the UK, the Dalai Lama chuckled and added, “If England, a small island, [is filled with] 90% Indians, then I don’t know.”

Reactions and Context

The Dalai Lama’s comments have sparked varied reactions, with some supporting his views on maintaining cultural identity, while others criticize his stance on immigration. The resurfacing of this interview highlights ongoing global discussions about immigration policies and cultural integration.
