India-Denmark Friendship: A Historic Bond

India and Denmark share a longstanding relationship, with diplomatic ties established in 1949. The partnership is rooted in shared democratic values and a mutual commitment to regional and international peace.

In 2020, during a Virtual Summit between Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Mette Frederiksen, bilateral ties were elevated to the level of a Green Strategic Partnership. This framework emphasizes sustainability and green development as central pillars of cooperation.

Key Developments Under the Green Strategic Partnership

The Indo-Danish Green Strategic Partnership has catalyzed collaboration in several key areas, including:

  • Clean energy and climate action
  • Sustainable development
  • Science, technology, and innovation

The partnership includes a Joint Action Plan (2021-2026) to address global challenges such as climate change.

Celebrating 75 Years of Diplomatic Relations

This year marks 75 years of diplomatic ties between India and Denmark. To commemorate the occasion, EAM Jaishankar and Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen unveiled a joint logo during the Raisina Dialogue 2024.

The two ministers also discussed a mid-term review of the Green Strategic Partnership, with plans to finalize an updated Joint Action Plan and convene the next India-Denmark Joint Commission meeting soon.

High-Level Engagements

India and Denmark have strengthened ties through frequent high-level interactions:

  • 2021: Danish Prime Minister Frederiksen visited India.
  • 2022: Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid an official visit to Denmark.

These visits underscored the growing depth of cooperation in green energy, technology, and sustainable development.

A Farewell with Gratitude

Freddy Svane’s tenure as Danish Ambassador has been instrumental in advancing the Indo-Danish partnership. His efforts have laid the groundwork for further collaboration under the Green Strategic framework, ensuring mutual benefits for both nations.
