Incident Details
The collision involved two Bombardier CRJ-900 aircraft operated by Endeavor Air, a Delta subsidiary. Flight 5047, arriving from Charlotte, North Carolina, was taxiing to its gate when its fuselage was struck by the right wing of Flight 5155, which was preparing for departure to Roanoke, Virginia. The impact caused significant damage to the nose of Flight 5047 and resulted in the detachment of the wing from Flight 5155.
Injuries and Passenger Safety
A flight attendant aboard Flight 5155 suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital as a precautionary measure. Fortunately, no passengers were injured during the incident. All 85 passengers from both flights were safely evacuated and transported back to the terminal.
Aircraft and Operational Impact
Both aircraft involved in the collision are Bombardier CRJ-900 regional jets, commonly used for short-haul flights. Despite the severity of the damage, the collision did not impact overall airport operations, and LaGuardia Airport continued to function without significant delays.
Delta Airlines' Response
Delta Airlines has expressed its commitment to safety and is cooperating with relevant authorities, including the Port Authority, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), to investigate the incident thoroughly. In a statement, Delta stated, “Delta teams at our New York-LaGuardia hub are working to ensure our customers are taken care of after two Delta Connection aircraft operated by Endeavor Air were involved in a low-speed collision during taxi. Delta will work with all relevant authorities to review what occurred as safety of our customers and people comes before all else. We apologize to our customers for the experience.”
