Hyderabad:
Chairing a high-level review meeting on monsoon preparedness at the Bodhi Pavilion in MCR HRD Institute, the Chief Minister expressed displeasure over the severe traffic congestion witnessed across Hyderabad, including Cyberabad, during the heavy rains on June 9. Despite weather alerts issued in advance, municipal, police and traffic personnel failed to respond effectively, he said.
Recalling that a review meeting had already been held on June 1, during which detailed instructions were issued, Revanth Reddy said the lack of coordination between municipal authorities and the police during the recent rains was unacceptable. He directed Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao and DGP C.V. Anand to identify lapses and initiate action against responsible officials. “If such situations recur, stringent measures will follow,” he warned.
The Chief Minister instructed all departments to act on weather forecasts and deploy personnel in the field during rain events. Municipal Administration, HYDRAA, Traffic Police, Water Board staff and Civil Police personnel must remain on the ground, he said, adding that everyone from the Police Commissioner to field-level staff should be visible on the roads. “If necessary, I too will come onto the roads,” he remarked.
Revanth Reddy emphasized that traffic jams caused by poor planning would no longer be tolerated. He ordered immediate filling of vacancies in the Traffic Department and called for advance planning based on data related to waterlogging points, black spots and traffic-prone areas.
The Chief Minister also expressed concern over power disruptions caused by fallen trees and directed the Electricity Department to restore supply without delay, including deployment of mobile transformers where required.
He instructed irrigation officials to ensure strict adherence to project operation manuals and directed engineers to remain stationed at project sites during the monsoon. Agriculture, drinking water, sanitation and health departments were also asked to remain fully prepared, with special focus on seed and fertilizer distribution, water quality monitoring and prevention of seasonal diseases. Coordination among all departments, disaster management agencies and law enforcement bodies was stressed to ensure an effective monsoon response.
