Inderjit Singh Gosal, a close aide of Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, has been arrested in Canada. He is 36 years old and was detained in Ottawa for illegal possession of firearms. This arrest comes shortly after a meeting between India’s and Canada’s National Security Advisors, showing closer cooperation between the two countries on counterterrorism.

Who Is Inderjit Singh Gosal?

Gosal is an important member of the SFJ group and has worked as Pannun’s bodyguard. After the death of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June 2023, he became a key organizer for SFJ in Canada.

In November 2024, Gosal was arrested for a violent incident at a Hindu temple in the Greater Toronto Area, where he was accused of attacking Hindu worshippers. Peel Regional Police later released him on certain conditions, and he was scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton.

Diplomatic Importance

Gosal’s arrest comes during a time of strong diplomatic talks between India and Canada. Last week, Indian NSA Ajit Doval and Canadian NSA Nathalie Drouin met in New Delhi. The Ministry of External Affairs said both countries agreed to work together more closely to fight terrorism and cross-border crime.

Security Concerns

Canadian police had warned Gosal in August 2024 about threats to his life. Pannun confirmed that authorities, including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, issued a “duty to warn” notice to him.

Despite the warnings, Gosal continued to support the Khalistani separatist plan for Punjab. In February 2024, his home in Brampton was attacked with gunfire, marking the second attack on Sikh activists in the area that month.

Why It Matters

Gosal’s arrest highlights ongoing concerns about Khalistani separatist activities in Canada. It also shows that Canada is taking these threats more seriously and working closely with India on security issues.

As investigations continue, the world will be watching how this case unfolds and its impact on India-Canada relations.
