Bangladesh Protest: Who was Dipu Chandra Das? The Hindu Man Lynched by a Muslim Bob in Bhaluka

Tensions are rising in Bangladesh following an increase in cases of violence that are spreading due to the death of a top July Uprising leader known as Sharif Osman Hadi. In a very disturbing and heartbreaking incident associated with these tense scenes, a Hindu man was lynched by an Islamic mob over charges of blasphemy.  According to reports, after killing the man, they suspend his body to a tree and eventually burn it, which indicates the level of brutal behavior exhibited by these groups of people.

Who was Dipu Chandra Das?

The victim’s name has been identified as Dipu Chandra Das, a young Hindu male, working as an employee in a garment factory. He resided in the Dubalia Para region of the Bhaluka Upazila as a tenant. He belonged to the Mymensingh region in Bangladesh.

According to local sources, Dipu was assaulted by a group of people on Thursday night. According to the police, the locals accused him of saying derogatory comments about Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). This assaulted him at around 9 pm, and he died.

Bangladesh Police Report on the Lynching Incident in Bhaluka 

Ripon Mia, duty officer at Bhaluka Police Station, confirmed “An angry mob caught hold of a man around 9 pm Thursday in protest to an alleged derogatory comment he made about Prophet Muhammad. They beat him to death, which was followed by setting his body on fire.”

According to the police, they responded to a information and managed to control the situation. Later, Dipu’s body was recovered and sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital mortuary for a postmortem. Ripon further added, “We are trying to find his relatives. We will take a legal action as soon as a case is filed.” It is reported that efforts are being made to locate Dipu’s relatives. A case will subsequently be registered.

Video of Lynching Went Viral on Social Media

Videos of this event have appeared on social media sites and are spreading quickly. These footage recordings appear to demonstrate a violent crowd attacking Dipu, while screaming “Nare Takbir Allahu Akbar”. The videos also show that some of the people who were in the mob were filming the killing with their mobile phones.

Political Response on Bangladesh Lynching Incident 

In response to the incident, the head of the BJP IT Cell, Amit Malviya, shared on the microblogging site X, “This is what the absence of protection for minorities looks like under the threat of unchecked Islamic extremism.”

He also condemned the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, saying, “This is exactly what Mamata Banerjee has been leading the Hindus of West Bengal towards a future where Hindus will be reduced to second-class citizens, their voices will be muffled, and their homeland will be made a sacrifice on the altar of her insatiable hunger for political power.”

Malviya added, “History has shown us the cost of appeasement politics. Ignoring warning signs today will only invite catastrophe tomorrow.”

Violence Against Hindu Community in Bangladesh

There has been an increase in violence between Hindus and Muslims, especially after Sheikh Hasina was overthrown from government and subsequently forced to flee the country. The violence further escalated following the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a political activist who was a well known leader in Bangladesh for his anti-Indian and extremist ideological beliefs.

What is behind The Bangladesh Protest

Hadi was shot on Dec. 12 and died on Dec. 18 while in treatment in Singapore. Since the death of Hadi, there have been continuous protest of unrest. There are reports that extremist groups have resurfaced, attacking media houses, the Indian embassy, and, most especially, the vulnerable Hindu populations.

The recent ynching of Dipu Chandra Das is the new instance which depicts the condition of law and order as well as the sense of insecurity among religious minorities in Bangladesh.
