Sydney police have named Naveed Akram as one of the suspected attackers in the deadly Bondi Beach shooting that unfolded on Sunday evening. The attack left at least 12 people dead and dozens more injured during a crowded event at one of Australia’s most famous beaches. Authorities are now searching Akram’s home as part of an expanding investigation.

Who is Naveed Akram?

Law enforcement sources say Naveed Akram, a 25-year-old man from Sydney’s south-western suburbs, is believed to be one of the two gunmen involved in the attack. Police raided his residence in Bonnyrigg on Sunday night as part of their ongoing enquiry. It is still not confirmed whether he was the shooter killed at the scene or the one taken into custody in critical condition.

What Happened at Bondi Beach?

The violence started on Sunday around 6.45 pm local time at Bondi Beach, where crowds had gathered for a Chanukah by the Sea celebration. Multiple gunshots were heard, with witnesses describing scenes of chaos and panic as people fled for cover. Police later confirmed the deaths of at least 12 people, including one of the gunmen, and many others were wounded.

Police Raid and Investigation

Police have launched a raid on Akram’s home following his identification as a suspect. The New South Wales Police Force is combing through evidence to determine his possible motives and connections. The investigation is also looking at whether the attack was planned or linked to extremist elements.

Explosive Devices Found

In addition to firearms, authorities discovered improvised explosive devices in a vehicle linked to one of the shooters. New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon confirmed the findings at a press briefing. “We have found an improvised explosive device in a car which is linked to the deceased offender,” he said.

Police Label Incident a Terrorist Attack

Australian police have classified the Bondi Beach shooting as a terrorist incident. They have set up an exclusion zone around the area and are examining several suspicious items found nearby. Specialist officers are analysing all materials to understand the scope of the threat.

  • These firsthand accounts highlight the terror experienced by those present.

National and Global Reactions

Australian leaders have strongly condemned the attack. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the scenes as “shocking and distressing” and praised first responders for their efforts. International figures have also expressed condolences and solidarity with Australia.
