A mass shooting at Sydney’s famous Bondi Beach on 14 December 2025 shocked the world as gunfire erupted during a Jewish celebration marking the start of Hanukkah, the eight-day Festival of Lights.

The attack left at least 12 people dead and many more injured. Leaders called the violence “shocking and distressing” as authorities investigate the motives and ongoing threat. honours

What is the Hanukkah Festival?

Hanukkah, also spelt Chanukkah, is a major Jewish festival. It is often called the Festival of Lights. The holiday is celebrated for eight nights every year, usually in December.

The name Hanukkah comes from a Hebrew word meaning “dedication.” It honors a historic event from more than 2,000 years ago when Jewish fighters reclaimed the Second Temple in Jerusalem from foreign control.

When is the Hanukkah Festival?

Hanukkah does not fall on the same dates every year on the international calendar. In 2025, it began on the evening of Sunday, 14 December — the same night the tragic shooting took place at Bondi Beach. The festival continues for eight nights and ends after nightfall on Monday, 22 December.

The Story Behind the Hanukkah Festival

The holiday is linked to a story of miracle and hope. After Jewish warriors regained the Temple, they wanted to light its menorah, a sacred seven-branched lampstand. They found only a small amount of pure oil — enough for one day of light.

However, according to Jewish tradition, the oil burned for eight days, not one. This unexpected event is regarded as a miracle, and today its memory remains at the heart of Hanukkah celebrations.

How is Hanukkah Festival Celebrated?

The most visible symbol of Hanukkah is the menorah — a special candle holder with nine branches. One candle is lit on the first night, and a new candle is added each night until all eight are burning. One branch holds the shamash (helper candle), which lights the others.

Many Jewish families place their menorahs in windows or doorways so the light can be seen by others, symbolising the spread of hope and faith.

Hanukkah Festival: Traditional Foods & Customs

Food plays an important role in Hanukkah. Because the original miracle involved oil, many people eat foods cooked in oil, such as:

  • Latkes (potato pancakes)
  • Sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts)
  • These dishes help remind people of the miracle and add flavour to the celebration.
  • Families and friends also exchange gifts, play games like dreidel, and gather for special prayers and songs.

Hanukkah Festival: Meaning & Significance

Hanukkah is a time for Jewish people to celebrate perseverance, faith, and joy in the face of hardship. It is a reminder of the value of freedom and the preservation of cultural and religious traditions.

In modern times, public menorah lightings have become common in cities worldwide. Communities gather in parks, squares, and near landmarks to share the festival’s message with others.

Hanukkah in the Context of the Bondi Beach Shooting

The tragic shooting at Bondi Beach happened during an event celebrating the first night of Hanukkah. People had gathered for festivities known as “Chanukah by the Sea” when gunmen opened fire, causing chaos.

Political leaders described the attack as a targeted act of violence while the Jewish community marked their holiday. The incident has drawn widespread condemnation and concern over safety during religious gatherings.
