Indian-origin executive Nikhil Ravishankar will succeed as Air New Zealand’s new Chief Executive Officer on October 20. Five years in the role of the airline’s Chief Digital Officer, Ravishankar’s promotion comes amid unprecedented challenges–from climate change and cost inflation to changing customer needs and digital disruption.
His appointment is a testament to the airline’s vision-driven strategy and ambition for leadership based on innovation, people-focused values, and local expertise.
Historic Appointment Amid a Period of Transition
Air New Zealand formally announced Ravishankar’s appointment on Wednesday. He will replace outgoing CEO Greg Foran, who had previously stated that he would be leaving his position in March. The airline held an international search before appointing Ravishankar as Foran’s replacement.
Air New Zealand Board Chair Dame Therese Walsh described the move as “a turning point” for the airline. She emphasised Ravishankar’s distinguished performance in the selection process and commended his leadership attitude. “Nikhil has the mindset and modern leadership we require,” Walsh said. “His digital acumen, international perspective, and commitment to people and nation were his standout qualities.
Since becoming a member of Air New Zealand in 2019, Ravishankar has spearheaded the transformation of the company digitally. Nikhil has been instrumental in updating the digital infrastructure. He is also improving customer experience and revitalising loyalty programs. His work created the foundation for a technologically advanced and responsive airline.
He had previously served as Chief Digital Officer (CDO) at Vector New Zealand and Managing Director at Accenture. He has worked in Australia, New Zealand, and Hong Kong. His professional career also involved leadership positions in Telecom New Zealand (now Spark).
Nikhil’s Vision: People, Purpose, and Innovation
In his initial public statement, Ravishankar declared he was “thrilled and humbled” to helm an organization he greatly admires. “It’s a privilege to assume this duty for our people, our customers, and our country,” he added.
He emphasized the airline’s focus on safety and innovation. “At the end of the day, we are a people business – purposeful, ambitious, and deeply anchored in Aotearoa New Zealand,” he concluded.
Victory for Diversity and Local Leadership
The appointment of Ravishankar marks a significant advancement in diversity and representation in high-level organizational roles. His appointment as the chief executive of Indian descent who was born and raised in New Zealand is a testament to the growing influence of multicultural leadership in the nation’s business arena.
It also confirms Air New Zealand’s commitment to mirroring its diverse workforce and customer base.
