A magnitude 4.9 earthquake hit off Australia's east coast on Saturday, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said. The epicentre of the quake was close to rural Kilkivan in Queensland, some 170 kilometres (110 miles) northwest of Brisbane. The quake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres (6.2 miles), which amplified its effect throughout the area.

First, the EMSC put the magnitude at 5.7, later reducing it to 4.9 following additional review.

Thousands Experienced the Tremors

According to Geoscience Australia, over 9,000 individuals said they felt the earthquake. Residents reported intense shaking that shook houses and triggered temporary panic in various towns. Even though the tremors were widespread, officials verified that there was no imminent tsunami threat.

Power Disruptions Throughout Queensland

The earthquake also cut power supplies in areas of Queensland. Energex, the state government-owned energy distributor, confirmed that approximately 11,000 homes were left without power after the shake. Emergency teams were sent out to mend services, with all except a few areas expected back on within hours.

No Serious Damage or Fatalities Reported

There were no reports of significant damage or casualties associated with the earthquake as of Saturday night. Officials are still keeping an eye on the situation and advised people to stay vigilant as aftershocks are possible.

Although Australia is not normally associated with regular large earthquakes, smaller earthquake tremors are occasionally registered. Only one day ago, an earthquake was registered 402 kilometers away from Arunachal Pradesh in India, again showing global seismic activity this week.

Government and Expert Response

Queensland authorities put their residents at ease that emergency measures were initiated the moment the quake was experienced. Seismologists explained that even though the quake was not strong, its shallow depth ensured that it was experienced far and wide.

Residents were advised to remain vigilant for reports but assured that there was no risk of tsunami or catastrophic destruction.
