In a dramatic turn in Nepal’s youth-led uprising, members of the Gen-Z protest movement on Wednesday unanimously selected former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as their interim leader during a virtual meeting that lasted nearly four hours.

Youth Demand Neutral Leadership

The meeting, held over Zoom, brought together hundreds of student leaders, activists, and representatives of the ongoing protests that have shaken Nepal’s political establishment.

Participants agreed that no youth linked to political parties would be allowed to take part in leadership discussions, underscoring the movement’s demand for neutral and corruption-free representation.

Who Is Sushila Karki?

Sushila Karki, Nepal’s first female Chief Justice and a widely respected figure known for her uncompromising stance against corruption, was chosen to lead the negotiations with state authorities and civic stakeholders.

At 72, Karki remains unaffiliated with any political party, a key factor that tilted support in her favor.

Timing of the Appointment

Her appointment comes at a time when public anger, especially among students and Gen-Z protesters, has toppled Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s government and forced multiple ministerial resignations.

The protesters, mobilized through social media despite government bans, have consistently demanded an independent voice to channel their concerns into meaningful political reform.

Sushila Karki Net Worth in Rupees

There are no official details about Sushila Karki’s personal wealth, but one website (People AI) has estimated her net worth to be around USD 1.78 million (15,68,50,857.73 Rupees) in early 2025.

This number has not been confirmed by reliable sources, so it should be taken only as an estimate.

Education of Sushila Karki

Sushila Karki has a strong educational background. She completed her Master’s degree in Political Science from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in India and later earned a Law degree (LLB) from Tribhuvan University in Nepal.

Her studies in politics and law helped shape her career and eventually led her to become Nepal’s first female Chief Justice.

Karki’s First Words

Speaking briefly after her nomination, Karki reportedly told participants that she accepted the responsibility “in the spirit of safeguarding democracy and ensuring the sacrifices of the youth are not wasted.”

Analysts say Karki’s credibility and legal background could provide a much-needed bridge between the restless youth and Nepal’s fragile institutions. However, with tensions still simmering in Kathmandu and other cities, the road ahead remains uncertain.
