Six peacekeepers killed as Bangladesh condemns a drone attack on a UN base in Abyei, Sudan, where its soldiers were serving under a UN mission.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangladesh issued a statement with deep shock and sorrow for the loss of lives. It confirmed the heartbreaking toll: six Bangladeshi peacekeepers killed and eight others injured during the strike.

UN Personnel Attacks Spark Condemnation

Bangladesh pointed out that these attacks against UN personnel are absolutely unacceptable and a grave breach of international law.

The government expressed profound solidarity with the families of the fallen and wished the injured soldiers a speedy and complete recovery.

The Sudanese government also joined the condemnation, saying it is dangerous escalation in the country’s ongoing conflict.

It was fast for the army-aligned administration in Port Sudan to point fingers at the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), saying it carried out the strike.

The United Nations facilities, said the Sovereignty Council led by army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, would not be attacked.

Conflict in the Midst of Humanitarian Crisis

The incident underlines how precarious the situation remains in Sudan, where the humanitarian crisis is deteriorating in various parts of the country.

To illustrate, Kadugli is a city in the crucial agricultural region of Kordofan, which is severely short of supplies, and famine was declared there officially at the start of November.

This area has become one of the main flashpoints, jammed between the two military factions. The Bangladesh Army posted an update on its Facebook page after midnight Saturday.

It said authorities were doing everything possible to provide necessary treatment to the injured and complete all rescue operations.

The Army said the situation has remained tense and unstable, as the country has not managed yet to regain stability from the terrorists, according to a statement. “It has been learnt that the situation in the area is yet to stabilise and the fight with the terrorists is continuing,” read the statement.

The military promised it would share more information with the people once the authorities received more reliable information regarding the problem. The global community is waiting for more details now on the ongoing conflict and the fate of the UN mission in the area.
