Nepal is facing its biggest political crisis in recent years after PM KP Sharma Oli resigned and reportedly fled in a helicopter to Dubai. The exit came amid violent Gen Z-led protests triggered by a social media ban and fueled by anger over corruption and inequality.
As protesters torched the Parliament and chased ministers on the streets, President Ram Chandra Paudel and Army Chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel began urgent talks to decide the next government.

Meanwhile, President Ram Chandra Paudel and Army Chief Sigdel are holding emergency discussions on how to form a new government. Many ministers, including Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel, faced public fury as angry crowds chased them through the streets.
How Nepal Protests Started?
On September 4, protests began after the government banned 26 social media apps like YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and X. The ban upset young people, especially Gen Z, who were already angry about corruption and bad governance.
Security forces tried to crush the movement with force. Within 24 hours, 19 people were killed in clashes. Protesters then stormed the Parliament, set fire to PM Oli’s residence, and refused to leave the streets even after the social media ban was lifted.
Anger Beyond Social Media
The social media ban started the protests, but bigger problems made them worse. People brought up past corruption scandals, such as the 2017 Airbus transaction, which resulted in penalties following an investigation and cost the government a significant amount of money.

Young Nepalis are particularly upset about leaders who don’t seem to care about their future, rising inequality, and a decline in employment opportunities.
Gen Z-Led Uprising
The protests mark a turning point in Nepal’s political history. Unlike earlier movements, this one is driven by Gen Z, who are using both the streets and digital platforms to push for change. Their demands have gone beyond the reversal of the ban. They now want full political accountability and even regime change.
Political experts believe this new generation will continue to shape Nepal’s politics. The protests show that young people are no longer willing to remain silent in the face of corruption and poor governance.
Nepal at Crossroads
The political future of Nepal is currently unknown, as they work to pacify the nation after Oli’s departure, all eyes are on President Paudel and the Army Chief. Nepal is currently facing a crucial phase, that is, will Gen Z’s movement fundamentally alter the country’s politics, or can its leaders bring peace and trust back?
