Nepal’s anti-corruption protests turned more violent on Tuesday as Gen Z-led demonstrators torched the private residence of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. The protests, which began over the government’s ban on social media apps, have now grown into a nationwide movement demanding accountability and the Prime Minister’s resignation.

PM Oli’s Residence Targeted

The protesters set fire to Oli’s house in Balkot, Bhaktapur. At the time, the Prime Minister was at his official residence in Baluwatar. Demonstrators shouted slogans like “KP Chor, Desh Chhod” (KP thief, leave the country) and “Take Action Against Corrupt Leaders” across multiple parts of Kathmandu.

Ministers’ Residences Under Attack

The violence was not limited to Oli’s home. Protesters pelted stones at the residences of Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel and Nepal Rastra Bank Governor Biswo Paudel. They also attacked the house of former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak.

Several other ministers’ homes, including that of Communications and Information Technology Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung, were targeted. Even the residence of Nepal’s President Ram Chandra Poudel came under protester attack.

Oli Refuses to Resign

Despite mounting anger, Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung made it clear that Prime Minister Oli will not step down.

He said Oli would continue to lead the government, even as violent demonstrations and cabinet resignations increase pressure on the ruling leadership.

Protesters Defy Curfew

Protesters ignored restrictions on public gatherings and marched through the streets of Kathmandu on Tuesday. They blocked major roads, including Kalanki, by burning tyres from early morning. The agitators carried banners and raised anti-government slogans, demanding strong action against corruption and the resignation of Oli.

The protests were led by young demonstrators who have been rallying under the “Gen Z” banner. Their movement has quickly spread across the capital, shaking the government’s stability.

Ministers Pull Out of Cabinet

Some ministers have pulled out of the Cabinet amid the escalating crisis. The move signals growing divisions within the government as public anger mounts. Monday’s protests had already left 19 people dead, intensifying the pressure on Oli to act.

Political Tensions at Breaking Point

The crisis began last week after the government banned popular social media apps, sparking outrage. Although the ban was lifted, the protests have since shifted focus to corruption and governance failures.

Prime Minister Oli has tried to calm the situation by calling for dialogue and all-party meetings. However, with protesters now torching his residence and openly demanding his resignation, the government faces its most serious challenge in years.
