Flight operations at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport were suspended on Saturday when a fire broke out in the airport’s cargo area, bringing widespread disruption. All flights have been suspended temporarily as firefighting personnel struggled to control the fire.

Fire Breaks Out Near Gate 8, Triggers Panic

The fire began at approximately 2:30 PM near Gate 8, officials say. Nine firefighting units were initially deployed, with fifteen other teams sent shortly thereafter, according to the first reports. Fire Service and Civil Defence Media Cell spokesman Talha Bin Jashim later reported that twenty-eight units were on the scene, with more reinforcements en route to the scene to put the fire out.

Multi-Agency Response in Full Force

The fire-fighting operation engaged not just the airport fire service but also Bangladesh Air Force units and assistance from the Bangladesh Civil Aviation Authority. Besides, two platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) also participated in the rescue and safety drive to maintain vigilance in the surrounding areas.

A representative of the airport assured the public, stating, “All our aircraft are confirmed safe. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops,” The Daily Star reported.

No Casualties, but Flights Suspended

Official reports stated that no immediate fatalities or major damage had occurred. The origin of the fire remains under investigation, and airport authorities are watching the situation closely before the commencement of full normal flight operations. It is recommended that passengers remain in contact with their airlines for information on rescheduled flight schedules.

Firefighting Efforts Continue Amid Uncertainty

The incident underlines the need for prompt coordination of response by various agencies. As efforts to fight the fire intensify, officials are keen on ensuring the safety of airport staff, passengers, and aircraft. Reports of the progress are expected as information emerges.
