Fear spread across a busy part of Dhaka on Wednesday evening after a deadly explosion under a flyover in Moghbazar. An unidentified man suffered critical injuries when a crude explosive landed near him and detonated. He later died at a nearby hospital. The attack has raised fresh concerns over public safety in crowded urban areas of the Bangladeshi capital.
What Happened in Moghbazar
The explosion occurred beneath a flyover near the Moghbazar Freedom Fighters’ Memorial. The location remains crowded throughout the day due to heavy pedestrian movement and nearby traffic.
Witnesses said attackers threw the explosive device from the top of the flyover. It landed on the road below and exploded instantly. The blast left one man severely injured.
He collapsed at the spot as bystanders rushed to help. Emergency services later took him to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Victim Identified as ‘Siam’
Family members later identified the victim as Siam. They said he worked at a private factory and was passing through the area when the blast occurred.
Relatives confirmed his identity several hours after the incident. Police initially said they could not identify him immediately due to the chaos at the scene.
Police Response and Investigation
Police quickly sealed off the area after the blast. Panic spread among locals as security teams searched for clues. Masud Alam, Deputy Commissioner of the Ramna Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said initial findings point to a targeted act.
“The blast occurred beneath the flyover. Preliminary findings suggest the bomb was thrown downward from the flyover. The motive has not yet been confirmed,” he said.
He added that investigators are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby locations and questioning witnesses.
Attackers Flee, No Claim of Responsibility
The attackers fled immediately after throwing the explosive. No arrests have been made so far. Authorities said no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Police are exploring all possible angles, including personal rivalry and criminal motives.
Security has been tightened in nearby areas as a precaution. The incident has triggered concern among residents who frequent the area daily. Many questioned the ease with which attackers carried out the act in a public space.
Police officials assured residents that they are increasing patrols and monitoring sensitive locations across the city. The investigation remains ongoing.
