Bangladesh witnessed another disturbing case of mob violence on Wednesday night as a man from the minority Hindu community was beaten to death in Rajbari district. The incident has added to growing concerns over law and order amid widespread unrest across the country.
The victim was identified as Amrit Mondal, who died after being assaulted by locals in Hosendanga village under Pangsha police station limits.
What Triggered the Rajbari Mob Attack
According to local accounts, the violence erupted after Mondal allegedly went to the house of a villager, Shahidul Islam, to demand extortion money. Family members raised an alarm, drawing nearby residents to the spot.
As tensions escalated, Mondal’s associates fled the area. Mondal, however, was caught by locals. He was reportedly carrying weapons at the time.
The mob beat him severely before he was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Police Action and Criminal Background
Police confirmed that Mondal had a criminal history. Authorities said at least two cases were pending against him at Pangsha Police Station, including a murder case.
Law enforcement officials arrested one of his alleged associates, Mohammad Selim, following the incident. Firearms were also recovered from Selim’s possession.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (Pangsha Circle) Debrata Sarkar said the incident took place around 11 pm on Wednesday. Police have launched a probe to identify all those involved in the mob attack.
Rising Violence Across Bangladesh
The Rajbari killing comes amid a series of violent incidents reported from different parts of Bangladesh.
On the same day, a young man died in Dhaka after miscreants hurled a crude bomb from a flyover. The victim, believed to be between 20 and 22 years old, was sitting at a roadside tea stall when the explosion occurred. He suffered critical injuries and later died.
Last week, another shocking incident was reported when 27-year-old Dipu Chandra Das was killed by a mob. His body was tied to a tree and set on fire, triggering outrage and fear among minority communities.
Unrest After Student Leader’s Death
Bangladesh has remained tense since the killing of student leader Osman Hadi in Dhaka. Hadi, a prominent figure during last year’s student protests, died from gunshot injuries on December 18.
Since then, protests, sporadic violence, and mob attacks have been reported across several districts. Rights groups and civil society voices have raised concerns about mob justice replacing legal processes.
Concerns Over Law and Order
The latest incidents have intensified debate over public safety and the protection of minorities. While police have promised strict action, repeated cases of mob violence continue to raise alarm.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing and those responsible will be brought to justice. However, the frequency of such incidents highlights the fragile security situation as Bangladesh grapples with political and social unrest.
