A minor earthquake with a magnitude of 3.7 struck Afghanistan early this morning, Friday, 24 October 2025. The quake happened at 6:09 AM Indian Standard Time (IST), said the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The quake had a depth of 80 kilometers.

The NCS posted the specific information on social media: “EQ of M: 3.7, On: 24/10/2025 06:09:41 IST, Lat: 36.38 N, Long: 71.14 E, Depth: 80 Km, Location: Afghanistan.” The coordinates indicate that the center of the earthquake was in Afghanistan. The comparatively lower magnitude of 3.7 indicates that this earthquake was probably not powerful enough to result in heavy damage or extensive destruction.

How Afghanistan Experienced This Natural Disaster Repeatedly

Individuals residing close to the center may have experienced a momentary shaking. Quakes with intensities below 4.0 are typically minor in nature. One Shaking Week: A minor quake follows a series of tremors experienced in the area during the last week.

A few days back, on Tuesday, October 22, a more powerful earthquake occurred in Afghanistan. The NCS said that the previously reported tremor was 5.0 in magnitude. Other groups relayed slightly varied reports, though.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), Reuters reported, estimated a 5.1 magnitude. This is a higher quake and struck the Hindu Kush area, a region with its mountain range and regular earthquake activity.

Why Earthquakes Occur in the Region of Afghanistan

Since Afghanistan is located in a region of the globe where big segments of the Earth’s crust, known as tectonic plates, are always moving and colliding with one another. Continuous pressure is what makes the ground tremble.

The Hindu Kush mountain range is a main zone for such activity, and hence the whole region is prone to frequent earthquakes, varying from small ones to much more powerful, destructive ones.

That the recent quake of magnitude $3.7$ happened at quite a large depth of 80 km may occasionally mute the strength of the shaking on the surface, as opposed to a shallow quake of the same magnitude.

Since the region is geologically active, the people are used to such activities, although the frequency and different intensity of the quakes act as a reminder to the ceaseless geological activity of the Earth. Officials and experts remain vigilant.
