Asia Power Index 2025: The Asia Power Index 2025 Published by Lowy Institute in November provides a full ranking of nations in terms of their capacity to impact regional matters and influence international politics. The Asia Power Index takes into consideration factors such as military power, economic power, role in international relations and leading positions in technology. The present Asia Power Index ranking portrays the advent of a new balance in Asia.
United States Leads with 80.4
The US leads with a score of 80.4, based on its unmatched military power, strategic partnerships with Japan, South Korea, Australia, and the Philippines, financial superiority, and technology. Although plagued with domestic polarization, the US remains Asia’s foremost defense provider and a major player in Asia in trade, AI and semiconductors.
China Leads with 73.7
China is second with a score of 73.7, which can be attributed to its robust economy, leading manufacturing capacity, and fast-expanding naval and air forces. The Belt and Road initiative, aggressive behavior in the South China Sea and in the Taiwan Strait are some measures in which China is increasing its reach. A slowdown in pace and opposition in the region have, however, reduced the speed of Chinese ascendancy.

India Leads with 40.0
With a score of 40.0, India can be considered the lone ‘major power’ in the region other than China and US. Rapid economic expansion, a blue-water navy, and important roles in both the Quad and ISFUN need to be factored in. Infrastructural deficiencies and socio-economic disparities are some areas where they have a long way to go.
Japan Leads with 38.8
Japan ranks 38.8 in being a high-capacity middle power state. Its advanced technology, aid programs, and role in global supply chains make up for a strengthening Self-Defense Force. Its latest security policies focus on counterattack capabilities in order to protect against dangers posed by China and North Korea.

Russia Leads with 32.1
Russia’s index of 32.1 represents hangover military power, oil production exports to Asia, and weapons sales in Asia, such as in India and Vietnam. But in Ukraine, with conflict, sanctions, and isolation, Russia lacks influence and a strategy is developing in China, Iran and some countries of Asia.
Australia Leads with 31.8
Australia ranks sixth with a score of 31.8, capitalizing on their resourceful economy, strong defense systems, and strong integration partnerships through AUKUS with America and the UK. Australia proactively participates in Pacific and Southeast Asian regional politics to counter China’s rising power.
South Korea Leads with 31.5
South Korea’s score is 31.5, which symbolizes a very strong economy, highly developed tech industry, and technologically advanced military despite threats from North Korea. Soft power based on culture, semiconductor investments and military expenditures gives Seoul good influence in the region despite complicated bilateral ties with America, China and Japan.
