iTV Network hosted the second edition of ‘We Women Want Conclave And Awards’ in New Delhi on Monday. The event was attended by Anti-Triple Talaq activists and victims of the practice themselves. They shared their views and experiences about the same.
Talking about her experience, one of the victims of Triple Talaq and an Anti-Triple Talaq activist, Nidha Khan said, “I was married in 2015 and the first issue was of my studies. My baby was aborted and I was brought home after which he wanted to get married to another woman. He divorced me via Triple Talaq within the court premises. He had signed the divorce papers and presented it in the court without my signatures and the divorce happened. People ask you to move on after the divorce which is not possible. The Samajwadi Party state government was very supportive of that family so they issued a ‘Fatwa’ on me, according to which I can’t be buried in Kabristan after death, nor can I be provided with medicines when I fall sick. Me and my family faced social boycott and were bullied.”
Another victim Uzma said,”I was married in 2020. It was an arrange marriage, and after that, I wanted to study further but my father-in-law refused. My in-laws started torturing and beating me. I was not complaining since I am a daughter and have been told to remain quiet. 8–9 months ago, I was thrown out of the house, and all my gold was sold. On March 1, I was given triple talaq.
Triple Talaq activist Shabbo Khan was married in 2012 and got divorced in July 2019. She got emotional while talking about her Triple Talaq experience. She said that after listening to the divorce thing, she fainted. She said, “If we both were in the marriage, then why does only he have the right to divorce? Even today, I can’t go back to my home, and I was beaten up by his kids from his other wife. I couldn’t go back to my home because our family was not wealthy. Till date, we are suffering badly.”
The event marks the second edition of the We Women Want Conclave and Awards, honouring India’s women achievers. The festival is an extravaganza celebrating women and saluting their spirit.
