NEW DELHI: If you spend even a few minutes scrolling through Instagram or TikTok, chances are you have seen it: glossy strawberries dipped in rich dark chocolate, neatly arranged on plates and marketed as the “ultimate” period snack. Influencers swear by it, pop-up stalls sell it as a “hormone-friendly treat,” and comments sections are filled with users claiming it eased cramps, lifted their mood and curbed sugar cravings during menstruation.

What started as a visually appealing real has quickly evolved into a full-blown wellness claim. The strawberry-dark chocolate pairing is now being promoted as a food that can reduce inflammation, ease menstrual cramps, improve digestion, stabilise mood and even help with bloating during periods. But how much of this is backed by science—and how much is simply the internet romanticising comfort food?

WHY THIS COMBO WENT VIRAL IN THE FIRST PLACE

Period-related content has found a massive audience online, especially among young women seeking alternatives to painkillers and hormonal medication. In that context, food-based solutions feel approachable, natural and non-threatening. Strawberries dipped in dark chocolate tick all the boxes: they look indulgent, feel comforting, and come with a long list of nutritional buzzwords—antioxidants, magnesium, fibre and vitamin C.

One viral reel by dietician Shweta J Panchal, who has close to four lakh followers on Instagram, helped push the trend further into the mainstream. In the video, she explains why this combination may work as a supportive period snack rather than just a dessert.

“Did you know strawberries dipped in dark chocolate make for a great period snack?” Panchal asks, before breaking down the nutritional logic behind the pairing. According to her, strawberries are rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, both of which help reduce inflammation. Dark chocolate, particularly varieties with 70 per cent cocoa or higher, contains magnesium—a mineral known to relax muscles and potentially ease menstrual cramps.

She also points out that strawberries provide natural sugars and fibre, which can help stabilise mood, support digestion and reduce bloating—common concerns during menstruation.

But does the science support these claims?

WHAT RESEARCH SAYS ABOUT STRAWBERRIES AND PERIOD HEALTH

While there are no large-scale clinical trials studying strawberries specifically for menstrual pain, existing research suggests they may play a supportive role.

A randomised controlled crossover trial published in the “National Library of Medicine” examined the effects of daily strawberry consumption on adults with cardiometabolic risk factors. Over 14 weeks, participants consuming strawberry powder showed significant improvements in antioxidant capacity and reductions in inflammatory markers such as tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α).

Although the study did not focus on menstruating women, inflammation is known to contribute to menstrual discomfort. This makes strawberries biologically relevant to period health, even if indirect.

The Cleveland Clinic also highlights strawberries as a strong source of vitamin C, an anti-inflammatory nutrient that helps lower stress responses in the body. Eight medium strawberries provide nearly 160 mg of vitamin C—close to the recommended daily intake. Importantly, experts at the Clinic note that whole foods like strawberries offer fibre and phytonutrients that supplements cannot replicate.

Strawberries also contain anthocyanins, powerful antioxidants that may help reduce internal inflammation. A Finnish study further found that eating strawberries alongside carbohydrates reduced insulin spikes, which can be useful during periods when hormonal fluctuations often trigger sugar cravings and energy crashes.

DARK CHOCOLATE AND MENSTRUAL PAIN: STRONGER EVIDENCE

Dark chocolate has been studied more directly in relation to menstrual cramps. Period pain is largely driven by prostaglandins—hormone-like compounds that trigger uterine contractions. Magnesium helps relax muscles and may inhibit prostaglandin activity, reducing cramp intensity.

A 28-gram serving of 70–85 per cent dark chocolate provides about 15 per cent of the daily recommended magnesium intake, significantly higher than milk chocolate.

Several small clinical studies support this link. A study conducted among teenage girls in Indonesia found that participants who consumed 40 grams of dark chocolate daily for three days experienced significantly lower menstrual pain compared to those who consumed milk chocolate.

An Indian university study involving 90 students found that those who consumed dark chocolate showed the greatest reduction in menstrual pain compared to milk chocolate consumers and a control group.

More recently, a 2022 randomised controlled trial found that dark chocolate consumption significantly reduced both menstrual pain and anxiety in young women with primary dysmenorrhea. Researchers concluded that dark chocolate’s effects were comparable to music therapy, though they emphasised the need for further research.

A 2023 study went a step further, examining dark chocolate supplementation in trained female athletes across menstrual phases. Participants who consumed 55 per cent dark chocolate showed reduced muscle soreness and improved performance, particularly during the premenstrual phase.

SO, DOES THE COMBINATION WORK?

According to Dr Sangeeta Sharma, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, there is no harm in consuming the strawberry-dark chocolate combination during periods—but expectations should be realistic.

“Chocolate contains magnesium, which helps relax muscles, including uterine muscles, and may reduce menstrual cramps,” she explains. “It also has antioxidants and flavonoids that can reduce inflammation and sometimes boost mood.

“As for strawberries, she adds that “vitamin C and antioxidants have been proven to reduce inflammation.” However, she cautions that direct clinical trials studying the “combined” effect of strawberries and dark chocolate during menstruation are still lacking.

“Most studies focus on individual components, not the combination,” Dr Sharma says. “It is a healthier option compared to sugary snacks, but it is not a magic solution. Individual responses may vary.”

She also stresses that diet alone cannot manage period pain for everyone. “Hydration, overall nutrition, physical activity and identifying underlying causes of severe cramps are equally important. A combined approach works best.”

THE BOTTOM LINE

The viral strawberry-dark chocolate combo is not just an internet myth—it does have a scientific basis. Both foods contain nutrients that may support mood, reduce inflammation and ease muscle tension during periods.
