If all we have will eventually end up as a pile of logs or six feet under, can anything truly be considered real? If everything is just an illusion, why bother striving for anything at all?
Well, while we’re alive, we rely on certain illusions to keep going. To survive, we need to acquire tokens, also known as money. We work to earn these tokens, excelling in things we enjoy to make life a joyous ride. Of course, we also seek happiness and harmony with those around us, avoiding pain and displeasure.
It’s all an illusion, but what choice do we have? We must play the game as long as we’re alive. Whether we call it a game or an illusion, we must embrace certain illusions to keep moving forward until the end arrives.
I find solace in the positive lines of Gurbani, where it’s said, “even the tasks or jobs I am involved in, have been provided to me by the Lord.” This implies that I’m merely a player, doing what’s necessary to survive and find happiness. Collecting and using tokens along the way.
Just remember, in the end, it’s all an illusion. Choose your personal illusions wisely and play your roles well.
